 PERMAFROST

monitoring – remote sensing – modeling

11-13 February 2014, ESA ESRIN, Frascati, Italy

Permafrost is one of the ECVs in the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). Field observations proof that the active layer and permafrost are already undergoing changes with further influences on the hydrology, the carbon budget, the denudation of permafrost landscapes and the human infrastructure. A thorough mapping, observation and understanding of the climate-driven surface dynamics at work in permafrost landscapes are needed.

The ESA DUE Permafrost project (2009 to 2012) has established a permafrost-related monitoring system based on a first set of circumpolar and regional products: Land Surface Temperature, Surface Soil Moisture, ground frozen/non-frozen state, terrain parameters, Land Cover, and surface waters. User groups including GTN-P/IPA provided ground data and the regional and thematic expertise for the evaluation of the remote sensing products. An interdisciplinary community interested in how to link permafrost-related remote sensing, modelling and field observation has been continuously growing.

ESA will continue to work with the user community on permafrost, organising a workshop on 11-13 February 2014 in ESRIN together with the Climate and Cryosphere project (CliC), the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) and the International Permafrost Association (IPA). The workshop will gather user requirements to monitor and model permafrost and contribute to current efforts of GTN-P for more operational permafrost monitoring.
