Innovators II - Aquatic Point Pollution Detection
Remote Detection of Aquatic Point Pollution Sources
Effluents from municipal and industrial waste water outfalls contribute to the pollution of coastal waters resulting in degradation of water quality and ecology. In the past, the limited spatial resolution capabilities of operational EO sensors (e.g., LANDSAT, RADARSAT-1, ERS, ENVISAT-ASAR) meant that only larger outfalls could be detected reliably.

It is the objective of this project to develop and implement efficient processes for the detection and characterization of aquatic wastewater outfalls using newly available SAR and optical high-resolution EO missions, including RADARSAT-2, TerraSAR-X and QUICKBIRD. To this end, established methods for water quality monitoring and slick detection will be adapted for use with high-resolution data, and the integration of EO-derived information into existing processes in place at the user organizations will be examined. |
