The proposed service and related products have addressed two issues related to monitoring changes in land use following fires and their environment impact:

  • Identification of land use changes over burned areas.
  • An assessment of the damage caused by forest fires using environmental indicators.

The first has provided, as output information to the end-user, Burned Areas Land Use and Change Detection Maps for the established monitoring period. The maps are "context sensitive": this means that they are differentiated according to specific burned area "priority class". All products have been designed in order to easily feed a GIS. The products have also been made compatible with the Italian Environment reporting system (SINAnet). This systems stores local, regional and provincial enviromental data to facilitate reporting at these levels and at national scale.

The second output is an Environmental Indicator GIS model based on the EO-derived information on burn areas extracted in the first phase together with ancillary end-user data.
