The objective of the project was to carry out all the preliminary tasks that would build the foundation for the implementation of a wide scale SLAM information service. This service, once deployed, would eventually support the geological risk services in managing slope instabilities, landslide risk analysis and evaluation.

This SLAM service development has been prepared through a critical study and review of the parameters involved in slope instability and their suitability to be remotely sensed through EO data. This critical review has been largely based on the results obtained in previous projects on the same subject (e.g. MASMOV).

Together with a detailed user requirement phase, this project has lead to the definition of potential EO-based products that can help the end-users in their institutional mandate regarding landslide prediction and mitigation.

The project was supported by some studies which indicated that an effective EO-based service for landslide management could be defined with the aim of identifying and discriminating millimetric displacements, possible indicators of creeping activity, over large areas. Contextualization of such displacement maps, through use of algorithms, allow to derive risk maps for landslide activity. Local authorities would be able, through insertion of such maps into their existing databases, to increase the reliability and effectiveness of their monitoring and prevention activities.
