The cryospheric research group at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, is dedicated to excellent research in polar regions, in particular monitoring of glacier mass balance and permafrost temperatures. These activities are closely coordinated with and contribute to efforts of the department’s atmospheric modeling group located at the "Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research" (CIENS).  The focus is to provide reliable validation data of process variables, thus contributing to understanding, modelling, and predicting of regional and global climatic processes as well as environmental feedbacks in the Earth’s Cryosphere.
