Improving the uptake of MERIS for coastal water monitoring

The importance of the coastal zone for economic activities, and the anthropogenic stresses on the ecosystem, have been described and discussed widely throughout the past 20 years. Responding to this, ESA designed the MERIS instrument specifically to provide measurements most suitable for coastal zone management and research. In space onboard Envisat since 2002, MERIS has now acquired a unique global data set ideally suited to the study of coastal waters.

 Objectives

The CoastColour project aims to improve user uptake of ESA's MERIS mission for applications in coastal waters by developing, demonstrating and validating the latest advanced techniques for retrieving information on water constituents across a range of globally distributed test sites. The objectives of the DUE CoastColour project are:

  1. Develop, validate and demonstrate best-practice regional optimisations of MERIS Case 2 retrieval algorithms over a globally distributed set of user defined areas of interest.
  2. Investigate the relative merits of MERIS Case 2 ocean-colour algorithms compared to other sources of coastal ocean-colour information, both EO and in-situ.
  3. Encourage and assist the scientific community to fully exploit the potential of MERIS data for monitoring coastal waters.
  4. Increase user uptake by demonstrating the value of MERIS ocean-colour products for monitoring coastal waters.

Product requirements have been derived from a thorough user consultation process, and all data products, documents and related information will be made available online from the CoastColour website.
