The “Agence Prévention et Sécurité (A.P.S.)†was created in 1986 to provide reliable and fast assistance services on hazardous substances for a better prevention of major accidents in the Walloon region of Belgium. APS offers 24 hours a day; 7 days a week technical services covering thousand of dangerous products.
Its mandate consists principally in developing computer programs for the management and reduction of technological accidents, which consist in the emission, fire, or explosion resulting from an uncontrolled development during the course of an industrial operation of any establishment covered by the SEVESO II Directive or transport of hazardous substances, and leading to danger to human health and/or the environment. His pillars of actions are the management of dangerous products data banks for Wallonia, the establishment of risk and urgent planning, and finally the determination of risk zones around SEVESO II establishments. A.P.S. manages several data banks on dangerous products (about 15.000 in total), that provides all stakeholders (i.e. fire-fighters, policemen, medical services, Red Cross, Civil defence) with exhaustive information on the nature of the hazardous products, their physicochemical characteristics, the circumspection to be taken, the necessary protection (gloves, respiratory mask) to be taken and first care to be given… Finally A.P.S. is the central Call center for all pollutions in Wallonia.
