The French National Institute for industrial and environmental risks, INERIS, is a public research Institute under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development. With a research staff of 500+ persons, INERIS has the mission of assessing and preventing accidental and chronic risks to people and the Environment due to industrial plants, chemical substances and underground operations.
In its Accidental Risk Division (100+ persons), INERIS aims at improving safety levels and limiting the effects of any accident occurring in the course of industrial activities and transports. It provides assessment and hierarchical classification of risks for an industrial installation, and expertise in decision-support and risk management tools. It assists in the drawing-up of national and European regulations on major accident hazard prevention. Three teams of this division especially work at evaluating the consequences of hazardous phenomena by both experimental and modelling approaches. In its Chronic Risk Division (160+ persons), INERIS provides expertise in toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental metrology and modelling and risk assessment, aiming at preventing pollution of air, soil and water due to industrial emissions. |
