Research Organisation
ISAC (ex ISAO) is a National Institute of CNR whose headquarters are located in Bologna on the southern outskirts of the Po Valley, at the foothills of the Apennines. Over 200 staff members, postdoctoral researchers, and students are organized into four divisions and focus on understanding atmospheric processes and climate.
Excerpts from the CNR mandate to the Institute: "The Institute is established to carry on activities of research, promotion and technology transfer in the following disciplines: Meteorology and its applications, Climate change and predictability, Atmospheric structure and composition,Observations of the planet Earth".

The Institute is organized in four divisions:

  • Dynamic Meteorology: includes basic and applied Meteorology, Dynamics of the Atmosphere and of the coupled Atmosphere-Ocean system, Turbulence at different scales, Predictability and Dynamic Climatology. The entire spectrum of atmospheric scales of motion, from the boundary layer to the planetary circulation, including Climate Dynamics, is considered.
  • Climate Change: main thematic branches are radiation in the atmosphere (radiative transfer models and remote sensing applications), historical reconstruction of climate in the past and analysis of extreme events, and dynamic climatology.
  • Earth Observations: acquisition and analysis of data from space, from a variety of in situ platforms and from ground based stations, for the observation and study of processes in the Earth atmosphere and oceans.
  • Atmospheric Processes: this includes activities on Atmospheric chemistry-climate interactions, Aerobiology, Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Microclimate for the Cultural Heritage, Cloud physics and Meteors
